Late Rally Not Enough as No. 20 ODU Falls at No. 1 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Old Dominion field hockey team scored three of the games final four goals, but could not dig out of an early deficit in a 6-3 loss at No. 1 Maryland Friday afternoon. Junior Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) scored a pair of goals and senior Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) tied her career-high with three assists in the loss.

Maryland, which beat Old Dominion by an identical 6-3 score on September 4 in Norfolk, improves to 15-0. The Lady Monarchs fall to 6-9 on the year.

Maryland struck first with back-to-back goals in a five minute span to take the early 2-0 lead in the opening stanza of play. The Terps got goals from Katie O'Donnell in the 14th minutes and Nicole Muracco in the 19th minutes. With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Muracco scored her second consecutive goal to give Maryland a 3-0 halftime advantage.

After back-to-back scores from the Terps to open the second period, sophomore Kathryn Kirk (Lititz, Pa.) got ODU on the board with her team-high eighth goal of the season. After Maryland pushed its lead back to five goals, Hatch came through with consecutive tallies to pull the Lady Monarchs to within three scores. ODU could get no closer the rest of the way.

Both teams had eight penalty corner opportunities, while Maryland held a 27-16 advantages in shots. Lady Monarch goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) recorded 10 saves.

Ueberroth's three assists matched her career-high which she set on Sept. 25 in an ODU win against Northeastern. Classmate Alyschia Conn (Peach Bottom, Pa.) also had two assists for the Lady Monarchs.

Old Dominion will complete a home-and-home series against Duke on Sunday at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The Lady Monarchs defeated the Blue Devils in Durham, 3-2, in overtime earlier this season.
