HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Lady Monarchs held James Madison empty in the first half, but the Dukes scored twice in the second for the win, putting ODU at 6-6-4 overall, 2-2-3 in CAA action. The win improves the Dukes to 8-6-1 overall, 4-2-1 in the CAA, as they made a move up the standings. Rookie goalkeeper Bri Alvarado made seven saves in the game to lead ODU.
Neither team mounted any scores in the first half as each had legitimate looks on net. ODU's Kirstin Walker put one on frame in the first five minutes and junior Kelsey Williams also added one in the 31st minute.
The Dukes upped the offensive pressure in the second half, forcing Alvarado to make several saves early in the period. The ODU freshman stopped three saves in the first ten minutes of the second half, all off the foot of JMU reserve forward Amalya Clayton. Then, in the 58th minute, JMU broke through.
The Old Dominion defense looked strong after a corner when Lisa Heise sent a on frame to the back post where junior midfielder Ashley Kukura made the team save for Old Dominion, preventing the first attempt. However, the clear attempt went right to the feet of Teresa Rynier about 30 yards out. Rynier took one touch and then sent a bullet from the center of the field into the back of the net on the right side.
Just over ten minutes later in the half, James Madison added the insurance goal as the CAA's leading goal scorer Corky Julien chipped a ball over the defense and found Kelly Germain streaking onsides. Germain was one-on-one with Alvarado and placed it to the left side of the net.
ODU pressed for the remainder, getting some runs on the outside, but the JMU defense held up for the clean sheet. Sophomore forward Victoria Johnson led for ODU, putting two shots on net. Alvarado's seven saves are the second most in her young career.
The Dukes outshot ODU 15-8 in the game and had nine corner kicks in the match.
ODU will travel to Richmond on Sunday for the team's final regular season match on the road as they face VCU. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. and live stats will be available through the VCU Athletics website.
