NORFOLK, Va. - Despite getting a pair of goals from sophomore Kathryn Kirk (Lititz, Pa.) and holding a four-goal lead in the second half, the No. 16 Old Dominion field hockey team dropped a 6-5 decision to Colonial Athletic Association foe Hofstra Sunday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

Old Dominion (6-8, 2-3) also got significant contributions from junior Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) and senior Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.), who each tallied a goal and dished out an assist.

The Lady Monarchs dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Pride 15-4 and holding an 8-0 edge in penalty corners. ODU used Kirk's two goals, a score from Hatch and junior Amanda Bieber's (Elizabethtown, Pa.) first tally of the season to go into the intermission up 4-1.

ODU continued to control the pace of the game early in the second stanza and earned an early penalty corner. After Hofstra goalkeeper Amanda Heyde made the save off the initial shot, Shea tapped in the rebound to give the Lady Monarchs a 5-1 lead in the 38th minute.

Hofstra did not go away though, scoring three goals in just over four minutes to pull within one. Genna Kovar scored two of the Prides three goal in that span, weaving through traffic both times and then finding the back of the cage.

Trailing by one with less than seven minutes to play, Amy-Lee Levey tipped in a crossing pass from Arielle Williams to tie the game at five. Hofstra would then take the lead less than two minutes later, converting on its third penalty corner of the game. Michaela Gallagher took a pass from Nancy Wagenbrenner and she buried her shot into the left corner of the cage to seal the comeback victory.

The Lady Monarchs will next step out of conference to travel to No. 1 Maryland on Friday, Oct. 18. The Terrapins defeated ODU 6-3 on September 4 at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
