TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Lady Monarch soccer team (2-2) held Arizona State University (3-1) to just one first half goal on the road today, but were unable to answer and fell, 1-0. Rookie goalkeeper Bri Alvarado saved a season-high four shots in the loss.
Old Dominion controlled the offense early in the game and found its best opportunity of the match in the 38th minute. Freshman Aubrie Ewell intercepted a bad touch from the Sun Devil defense back to the keeper and had a pass to rookie Hallie Rogers for a shot on the empty net, but Rogers sent her shot just wide.
Going back the other way just a minute later, the Sun Devils struck with the lone tally of the game. Freshman Kiara Williams received a long pass from Lindsey Johns on the right sideline and had just one defender to beat. She dribbled inside, cut the ball back to her left foot and buried the ball off the far post.
In the second half, both teams squandered good opportunities due to solid defense. ODU put two shots on-net and Arizona State forced three into the goal mouth, each stopped by Alvarado.
In the final few minutes, ODU upped the pressure, trying to work the defense for the equalizer. With just five seconds remaining, freshman Ashlee Coutu was able to get a shot off inside the box, but it deflected off an ASU defender and was easily saved by goalkeeper Briana Silvestri. Silvestri notched her second shutout of the year by making two saves and playing the full 90.
Ewell, Johnson and Coutu led the Lady Monarchs with two shots to lead ODU. Alvarado's GAA stays at 1.00 with the full game and her save percentage jumped to .750.
