NORFOLK, Va. -- The Lady Monarch soccer team (5-4-1, 1-0-0) scored a goal in each half and locked down defensively for their fourth shutout of the season to drop Georgia State (6-3-0, 0-1-0) on the road in the CAA season opener today. Senior Kirstin Walker (Inwood, W.Va.) notched her second career gamewinner with a header in the first half while rookie Ashlee Coutu (Lebanon, Conn.) added the insurance goal just over a minute into the second frame.

Old Dominion came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Panthers 12-4, including three shots on goal in the first six minutes. In the 19th minute, senior midfielder Jodi Knorowski (Newport News, Va.) sent a cross into the box where Walker put her head on it past the Georgia State keeper, Heidi Blankenship. It was Walker's third goal in as many games and her second gamewinner this season.

Despite the offensive pressure, ODU was unable to put another goal on the board in the first half, leading 1-0 at the break. It was just over a minute into the second half that freshman Ashlee Coutu would add to the score though, tallying her fifth goal of the season.

Sophomore Victoria Johnson (Norfolk, Va.) would add to her team leading assist total with a touch to Coutu just 1:15 into the second half. Coutu knocked home the score to give the Lady Monarchs a 2-0 lead,

Georgia State upped the pressure in the second half, taking 10 shots, but put just one on frame. Rookie goalkeeper for the Lady Monarchs, Bri Alvarado (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted her third career shutout and made three saves in the contest. Her season goals against average is down to 0.61 after the win.

Defender Lani Huntley led the way offensively for the Panthers, taking five shots. Knorowski, Coutu and sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Weidner each had two shots on-goal for the Lady Monarchs.

ODU will return home for the second half of the CAA season opening weekend, as they face UNC Wilmington (4-4-0, 0-0-0) at the ODU Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks host William & Mary in their conference opener tonight at 7:00 pm.
