NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior men's tennis player Tobias Fanselow reached the singles final at the Monarch Collegiate Open and ODU got wins from eight more men's and women's players in the consolation bracket Sunday. Joanna Dobrowolska took fourth at the UVa Fall Invite for the women's team.
"It was very positive weekend for the Old Dominion tennis program," said head coach Darryl Cummings. "Nadine and Joanna did very well at the UVA tournament; Nadine had defeated a quality ranked opponent from NC State. It was a unfortunate, however, that she had to retire from the tournament with a foot injury. The men's tennis program and the remaining women's team saw much success at the Monarch Collegiate Tennis Invitational."
A pair of Lady Monarchs participated in the UVa Fall Invite this weekend, but junior Nadine Fahoum was forced to withdraw from competition after sustaining an injury to her foot. Joanna Dobrowolska took fourth in B singles, after falling to Marshall's Koprcina in the third place match, 6-2, 6-2.
"Tobias won the doubles with Benjamin along with advancing to the finals of singles. All of our players were able to get in 3-4 singles matches and around three doubles matches this weekend. It was great to see our new players play this weekend and the competition will provide our practice with a greater sense of purpose this week."
Fanselow won a 6-4, 7-5 decision over VCU's CJ Williams to advance to the singles final, but lost to the Rams' Krisztian Krosco after taking the second set. The final was 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (1).
Four men's players and four women's players added wins in the consolation bracket on Sunday. Yakov Diskin defeated sixth seeded Camill Salomon (6-4, 6-1) and women's team players Diana Ivanova and Marija Citic each won 6-1, 6-1 matches.
Next week, the Lady Monarchs will travel to the Wake Forest Collegiate Invitational and face opponents from Duke, Richmond, Illinois, UNC Greensboro, Davidson and Wake Forest. The men's team will send Fanselow, Benjamin Chomette and Krzysztof Muzalewski to the Men's UVa Invite, where over half the players will be nationally ranked.
