GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The ODU Lady Monarchs (3-4) matched East Carolina (4-1-1) for nearly the whole game on Sunday, but gave up the lone score of the match with just 3:39 remaining and suffered a 1-0 setback. Rookie goalkeeper Bri Alvarado (Cincinnati, Ohio) saved four in the game, but saw her overall record drop to 2-3.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, with the Lady Monarchs putting three shots on-goal. It wasn't until the 87th minut of play that ECU would break through, scoring on a long shot from the right side. Bailey Wilcox got by her defender and lofted a long shot into the back pocket over the head of Alvarado.
Old Dominion was led by Victoria Johnson (Norfolk, Va.) who had two shots on-goal, while Ashlee Coutu (Lebanon, Conn.) and Kelsey Williams (Newport News, Va.) each had two shots including one on-goal.
Berit Hansen posted the shutout for the Pirates, making five saves, while Alvarado also played the full 90 minutes, making four saves and allowing just the one score. ECU was led offensively by Jessica Swanson, taking four shots and assisting on the score.
ODU heads home for the final two non-conference games of the season as they play host to Radford and Loyola University (Md.) this weekend. Kick-off against Radford on Friday night is set for 6:00 p.m. as it is the first game of a doubleheader scheduled with the men's team, who plays Penn State immediately following.
