LYNCHBURG, Va. -- ODU rookie Ashlee Coutu (Lebanon, Conn.) added to her hot start with the best game of her young career, leading the Lady Monarchs (3-3) past the Liberty Flames (1-3) by a final score of 3-1. Coutu scored two goals, including the gamewinner, and added an assist on the third. She has factored into every single one of the Lady Monarchs scores this season with either an assist or the goal.

Coutu wasted no time, jumping on the Flames just 1:12 into the match. She received a pass from senior midfielder Jodi Knorowski (Newport News, Va.) and laced a 20-yard bullet into the upper ninety on the right side.

She and the Lady Monarchs would add to their lead in the 11th minute. Coutu got the cross from sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Weidner (Harrisburg, Pa.) on the right side and scored on the back post.

The quick start would be capped by a third goal in the first 20 minutes, as sophomore Victoria Johnson (Norfolk, Va.) got her first goal of the season, 10th of her career. Senior defender Brittney Kortz (Yorktown, Va.) and Coutu combined on a pair of passes to Johnson who knocked it home on the left side.

ODU would not let up in the game, taking 18 shots to Liberty's seven. Rookie goalkeepers Bri Alvarado and Laura Bush combined to make three saves in the game, while Bush allowed the lone tally early in the second half. Liberty's Madison Short scored an unassisted goal from 15 yards out in the 48th minute of play.

Liberty was led by goalkeeper Karen Blocker, who made nine saves in the match, and Maria Owen, who took four shots including two on-goal. The Lady Monarchs got eight shots, including five on-goal from Knorowski, and four shots from Coutu including the two goals.

The win improves ODU to 3-3 on the season and gives the Lady Monarchs their first win on the road this season. The team travels to East Carolina for a game on Sunday, at 2:00 pm.
