NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion scored three second half goals, including two in the final nine minutes of play to defeat Virginia, 3-1 in an exhibition match in front of 1,444 at the ODU Soccer Complex. Both teams were picked to finish second in their respective leagues.

After a scoreless first half, senior Nane Joseph (Cameroon) scored on a penalty kick with 16 minutes left after he was fouled in the box. Virginia came back at the 81:44 mark on an unassisted goal by Ahkeel Rodney to tied the match at 1-1.

With a little more than six minutes left senior Ambane Emmanuel (Cameroon) got a break a way pass from Nick Foglesong (Fredericksburg, VA.) to put ODU up 2-1. Freshman Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.) finished the scoring with Less than five minutes left on an assist from fellow newcomer Chris Harmon (Downingtown, PA.) for the final, 3-1 margin.

Virginia edged ODU in overall shots, 9-8 and 6-3 in shots on goal. ODU junior keeper Evan Newton(Virginia Beach, Va.) came up with five saves on the evening.

The Monarchs return to action Thursday in Chapel Hill when they play their final exhibition atsecond ranked North Carolina. Game time is 7 p.m.
