RALEIGH, N.C. - For the first time in five years, the Lady Monarchs suffered a season-opening loss, as they dropped a 3-0 decision to NC State (1-0) on the road Friday night. ODU (0-1) will host George Washington and High Point University next Friday and Sunday, respectively, for the home-opening weekend in Norfolk. The GWU game will be a 7:00 pm kick-off and the High Point tilt will begin at 1:00 pm.
North Carolina State got goals from three different players to defeat ODU in the first game of the 2009 season. ODU took eight shots in the game, including two on goal.
In the first half, the Wolfpack established a 2-0 lead with a pair of hard shots from just inside the corner of the box. Paige Dugal connected from the right side in the 17th minute off an assist from Kara Blosser and Nadia Aboulhosn sent one into the far upper corner from the left side with just over 16 minutes remaining in the frame. Rookie goalkeeper Bri Alvarado (Cincinnati, Ohio) made diving attempts at both, but both were placed out of reach.
ODU was not without chances in the first, as freshman Aubrie Ewell (Richmond, Va.) paired a couple terrific looks together in the 24th minute. Ewell intercepted a bad touch from an NC State defender and knocked a line drive to the right side from about 10 yards out, but it went wide. Then, just a minute later, she was alone outside the box on the left side and blasted a shot past the diving Wolfpack keeper and into the right post.
NC State added a goal for the final score, 3-0, in the 57th minute when Chantalle Dugas drove a one-timer in past the diving ODU keeper, Laura Bush (Ft. Thomas, Ky.). Meredith Parrilla assisted on the goal.
ODU junior Kelsey Williams (Newport News, Va.) nearly put the Lady Monarchs on the board in the final five minutes with a long, arcing shot over the keepers head, but just right of the goal. Rookie goalkeepers Alvarado and Bush both got 45 minutes in net for ODU, with Bush saving three and Alvarado two in their collegiate debuts. Ewell led the way for ODU with a pair of shots, including the one on goal. Senior Kirstin Walker (Inwood, W. Va.) also had a shot on goal for ODU.
NOTES: The matchup was the first between head coach Joe Pereira and former assistant coach Steve Springthorpe. Springthorpe coached for Pereira at Methodist College.
