NEWPORT NEWS, VA--Six Old Dominion University graduating seniors Alexsandr Seleznev (Tennis), Brittany Washko (Lacrosse), Ryan Williams (Wrestling), Jen Nuzzo (W. Basketball), Jonathan Adams (M.Basketball), and Katie Watson (Women's Soccer) have been selected to the 2009 VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Director's) Academic All-State squad.
Alexsandr Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic), the CAA's Scholar Athlete of the Year and ODU's recipient of the Jack Wilkins-James Howard Male Scholar athlete of the Year award compiled a 29-9 record for the men's tennis squad. He advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both singles and doubles. Seleznev, a finance/decision science major was also named CAA Player of the Year.
Brittany Washko (Dunkirk, Md.), a defender, helped lead the Lady Monarch lacrosse team to 11 wins and a top 20 national ranking. Washko was a recipient of the Procter & Gamble Health CareDivision award and was ODU's recipient of the Jack Wilkins-James Howard Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Ryan Williams(Mechanicsburg, PA.), reached the NCAA finals at 141 pounds and earned All-American honors for the Monarch wrestlers. The marketing major was named CAA Wrestler of the Year, the ODU Alumni Association's Male Athlete of the Year, and the Norfolk Sports Club Tom Scott Award . Williams compiled a 39-4 record this year and completed his career with 137 wins.
Jen Nuzzo(Newport News, VA.), played and started in all 30 games for the Lady Monarchs. The sports management major was the co-recipient of the CAA's Dean Ehler's Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions on the floor, in the classroom and in the community. Nuzzo is a four-timeCAA All-Academic selection.
Jonathan Adams (Ringgold, GA.) hit three game winning shots for the Monarchs this seasonas they captured the inaugural Collegeinsider.com championship and won 25 games. The three-timeCAA All-Academic selection and 2007 CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year is ODU's career leader with 135games played. Adams is a psychology major.
Katie Watson (Woodbridge, VA.) led the Lady Monarchs in goals with 12 and was named first team All-CAA and All-Region. Watson, the 2006 NSCAA Academic All-Scholar selection is a sports managementand marketing major. Watson was named first team All-Region this season. She ranked third in theCAA this past season in scoring with 33 points and goals scored.
In all, 213 collegiate student-athletes across the Commonwealth of Virginia were honored for their performances both in the classroom and in competition as the organization selected the 2008-09 VaSID Academic All-State Team.
