UNCW Rallies To Beat ODU, 7-5 In CAA First Round

WILMINGTON, NC-- Cody Stanley's grand slam homer in the seventh inning helpedcapped a four-run rally as the third seed Seahawks of UNC Wilmington (28-21) defeated fourth seed Old Dominion (22-26), 7-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association first round. ODU will play top seed George Mason Thursday at 3:30.

UNCW reliever Stephen Harrold picked up the win in relief going 5.1 innings of nowruns and seven strikeouts.

The Seahawks broke out on the scoreboard first on an Andrew Cain double which platedMatt Holt.

ODU came back in the second. Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) led off with a single and scored from second on a Seahawk throwing error.

The Monarchs took the lead on a three-run homer by Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) which plated Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico), and Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.). Josh Wright then hit a solo homer, his 11 of the year to give ODU a 5-1 lead in the third.

UNCW cut the lead to 5-2 when Cody Stanley singled home Ben Thielson in the fifth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mike Rooney led off with a single, the Bobby Leeperreached on a fielders choice. Thielson singled and Grayson Evans followed with awalk to load the bases which set up Stanley's grand slam.

ODU starter Kyle Hall (Springfield, Va.) pitched six-plus innings, his longest of the season, holding UNCW to two runs until the seventh. He fanned six, walk just two.

Jake McAloose led the Monarchs with two hits and three RBI to raise his batting average to .412, third best in the CAA. Josh Wright and Donnie Corsner also had two hits each.

Gerard Hall extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the third.Cody Stanley led the Seahawks with three this and five RBI. Ben Thielsen and Matt Holt also had two hits for UNCW.

All three top seeds rallied to win today. Both Georgia State and George Mason wontheir games in the bottom of the ninth.

The Monarchs will play top seed George Mason at 3:30 Thursday. Northestern willPlay Delaware at 12 noon and UNC Wilmington will meet Georgia State at 7 p.m.
