NORFOLK, VA--The UNC Wilmington Seahawks ( 27-20/9-7) defeated Old Dominion (21-24/12-10), 17-7 Thursday Night, pounding out 24 hits.
UNCW's Bobby Leaper hit for the cycle and knocked in four runs, including a three-runhomer in the third inning. Leaper along with Grayson Evans had four hits each for the Seahawks, while Mike Rooney led with five hits on the night.
Jake McAloose led ODU with four hits and two RBI. Gerard Hall had three hits and drove in two runs for ODU. Max Most also had three hits for ODU. McAloose is nowhitting .408 on the season. Hall extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
The Seahawks scored first as Alex Hill doubled home Grayson Evans and Matt Holt in the first inning.In the second inning, UNCW scored two more onBen Thielson RBI singled in Bobby Leeper and Cody Stanley singled home Thielson for a 4-0 lead.
In the third inning Bobby Leeper slammed a three run homer to give UNCW at 7-0 lead,then Holt doubled home Evans and Stanley for a 9-0 Seahawk lead. In the fourth Leeper's sacrifice fly plated Mike Rooney.
ODU got on the scoreboard in the third when Gerard Hall'sacrifice fly scored EdgarHernandez from third and Max Most scored on Jake McAloose's single to left to make itin the sixth Brett Harris' groundout plated Gerard Hall. Hall then singled home Hernandez in the seventh.The Monarchs added three runs in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Game two of the series is Friday night a 7 p.m.
