NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion's freshman first baseman Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) hit a two-out grandslam home run in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Monarchs to a 6-2 win over VMI. ODU (16-20) has now won four straight and six of their last seven games.
In the ODU tenth with two outs, Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA. ) struckout, but reached on a passed ball. Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, Va. ) walked and Chris Buss (Rosemount, MN.) was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Wright then hit the first pitch over the left field fence to end the game.
ODU led 1-0 behind the strong pitching of Chris Boggs (Manassas, Va. ). The junior righthander fanned a career high 11 batters in eight innings of work. He lost his shutout in the eighth when A.J. Yoder hit a two-run homer with Sam Roberts, who reached on an error aboard to give VMI a 2-1 lead.
The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded as Max Mostscored from third on a balk. ODU's first run came in the first inning on Jake McAloose's sacrifice fly plated Gerard Hall (Washington, DC. ) who doubled and stole third.
VMI's Matt Edwards and Travis Smink held ODU to just two hits through eight innings. MichaelDevine took the loss, while Austin Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) pitched the ninth and tenth for ODU to get his first win of the season.
ODU travels to the University of Richmond for a 3 p.m. game Wednesday afternoon.
