Norfolk, Va. – Top-seeded Georgia State ended ODU’s quest to advance to the finals of the CAA Championship, as the Panthers defeated the No. 4 seeded Lady Monarchs 4-2 Saturday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Georgia State had to rally from an early deficit after ODU claimed the doubles point. The Panthers number three tandem of Martina Ondrackova and Linda Hricistova topped Charleen Haarhoff and Marija Citic, 8-3, but the Lady Monarchs prevailed with an 8-3 triumph by Nadine Fahoum and Margarita Spicin over Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova at number one followed by ODU’s Joanna Dobrowolska and Irina Dementyeva beating Dariana Kozmina and Kiara Powell, 8-5, at number two.
The teams split the first two singles matches as State’s Ondrakova was a 6-1, 6-4 victor over Citic at number six, and ODU’s Dementyeva picked up a 6-1, 7-5 win over Kiara Powell at number five. The matches at the top four seed all went to three sets, with Georgia State coming out on top in three of them to earn the victory. Nitkova beat Haarhoff, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at number two, Kozmina got past Dobrowolska, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at number three and Gresova clinched the win by besting Spicin, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at number four.
