ELON, NC--The Elon University Phoenix (21-12) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Old Dominion (12-20), 5-4 in anon-conference game Wednesday afternoon. The Monarchs were led by Max Most and Edgar Hernandez with two hits each.
Elon scored first with a solo homer from Justin Hilt, his 10th of the year in the first inning. Monarch sophomore catcher Edgar Hernandeztied the game in the third with a solo homer of his own.
With Elon leading, 3-1, ODU rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Edgar Hernandez led off with a single and moved to thirdon a double by Max Most. Hernandez then scored on Gerard Hall's single to make it 3-2 Elon. ODU then loaded the bases, and Max Most scored ona wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Gerard Hall then scored on a groundout double play ball to give ODU a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Pat Irvine led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. After Bennett Davis singled and moved tosecond on the wild pitch, and sacrificed to third, he scored on Ryan Adams sacrifice fly to give Elon the 5-4 lead.
Thomas Girdwood came on in the ninth to get his ninth save of the year for The Phoenix. ODU starter Corey Toth pitched seven innings with five hits threewalks and five strikeouts in a no-decision. Pat Irvine led Elon with three hits, including his 13th homer of the year in the fourth.
The Monarchs return to CAA action when they host the Pride of Hofstra in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m. in the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
