NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team swept the final Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) weekly awards. Junior Jessica Canady (Williamsburg, Va.) was named the CAA Player of the Week and freshman Mairi Buchan (Stirlingshire, Scotland) was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for their efforts in the Lady Monarchs' 87-72 victory over William & Mary last Wednesday.
Canady helped the Old Dominion women's basketball team close the 2008-09 regular season by pouring in 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Tribe. It was the junior's eighth double-double of the season. Canady shot 54 percent from the field going 7-of-13. Additionally, she added two blocks and four steals.
Buchan was one of six Lady Monarchs in double figures in Wednesday night's win with 12 points. Shooting 83 percent from the floor went 5-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. She also hauled in three rebounds in the victory.
Old Dominion, winners of the last 17 straight CAA Tournament, will begin defense of its crown on Friday at 2:30 in the quarterfinals of tournament play at the JMU Convocation Center. The Lady Monarchs will face the winner of the first round match-up between #5 UNC-Wilmington and #12 George Mason.
The Old Dominion University athletic department will offer bus transportation to the CAA Women's Basketball tournament in Harrisonburg, VA., for the semifinal and championship rounds on March 14 and 15, should the Lady Monarchs advance in the tournament.
The bus will depart each day from the Ted Constant Convocation Center, returning after the Old Dominion Lady Monarch game. The cost of the bus each day is $50 and includes roundtrip transportation and game ticket. A minimum of 40 fans must register for the bus each day to guarantee the transportation package.
