NORFOLK, VA--George Mason (15-4/1-1) senior lefthander Mike Modica fanned 11 and junior catcher Chris Henderson hit for the cycle to lead the Patriots to a 4-2 victory over Old Dominion (6-12/1-1) Saturday.
ODU was led by freshman designated hitter Brett Harris (Virginia Beach, Va.) with two hits, while Joe Velleggia (Monkton, MD. )slammed a solo homerun in the fifth inning. ODU's second run came in the eighth inning when Max Most (Port Washington, NY. ) singled up the middle to plate Josh Wright. ODU senior Brady Burchill (Hope, ND. )pitched six innings with five strikeouts and three runs allowed.
Modica pitched eight innings allowing three hits, two runs, no walks and fanned 11 batters.Ryan Brecko came on in the ninth for the save. ODU put two runners on in the ninth and ChrisBuss hit one to deep leftfield where Scott Krieger jumped and caught it on top of fence.
Henderson led the Patriots with four hits as he homered in the first inning, singled in the third,Doubled in a run in the fourth and tripled in the eighth inning.
Spencer Wiggins singled in a run in the fourth and Shane Davis walked with the bases loaded toforce in a run in the sixth inning.
The third game of the CAA series is Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
