Lady Monarchs Open 2009 Season Against American at 1:00 pm Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. -- The ODU Lady Monarchs lacrosse team will open the 2009 season against American University (1-2) on Saturday, February 28 at 1:00 pm at the Powhatan Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs will face an Eagles team that has already played three regular season games, including a 12-6 win over George Washington earlier this week. Old Dominion is 8-1 in the last nine season openers.

Looking ahead to the 2009 season, the Lady Monarchs will be a very experienced squad. The ODU team graduated just four seniors last year and will return the top three leading scorers from a year ago: senior Kelly Kimener (19g, 13a, 32pts), junior Ashley Kellogg (23g, 6a, 29pts) and senior Jessica Noone (16g, 10a, 26pts).

The team will also return Brittany Washko, team leader in groundballs (30) and caused turnovers (21), with seniors Erica Erb, Jordan McKeon and Lindsey Belle holding down the defensive end of the field. ODU finished the 2008 season with a 4-9 overall record.

American is scoring over eight goals a game early this season, allowing 11 per. Six different players have already tallied four points for the Eagles, including five goals from senior attack Gina Ibello. Frankie Solomon has been in goal for most of the season, allowing 12.15 goals against while saving 42.9% of shots.

The game is set to begin at 1:00 pm at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Admission is free to all fans and for those who can't make it, live stats will be available through odusports.com.
