NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team was honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Monday as one of 65 Division I field hockey programs earning a National Academic Team Award for attaining a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Lady Monarchs boasted the second highest GPA among all Division I field hockey programs compiling a team average of 3.47.

During the Fall of 2008, the Lady Monarchs had 13 of its members named to the Dean's List including senior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) and junior Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N,.Y.), both of whom were named First Team All-CAA. Smither was also named First Team All-State and Second Team All-Region after leading the team in scoring with 25 points, 11 goals and three assists. Shea collected five goals, placing her name right behind Smither in goals scored, and registered five defensive saves.

Since 1989, the Old Dominion field hockey team has earned a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Last season, 18 members of the Lady Monarchs were named to the NFHCA Division I Academic Squad, the most of any Division I field hockey program.
