Lady Monarchs Fall To Hofstra, 66-51

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Old Dominion women's basketball team suffered a 66-51 loss to the Pride of Hofstra University in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women's basketball action Thursday afternoon.

The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 14-10 overall and 9-5 in the league, tying the record for most CAA losses in a season. The 1991-92 squad finished the year at 9-5 in the league, but went on to capture the first of 17 consecutive conference crowns.

Old Dominion opened the game ahead 11-4 thanks to the inside presence of junior Jessica Canady (Williamsburg, Va.) and senior Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) and led by as many as seven in the opening minutes of the contest. The Pride, however, managed to cut away at its deficit and claimed the lead on three by Natty Fripp. Fripp's trey gave Hofstra a 19-18 edge with 5:52. Old Dominion entered the lockerroom down, 26-24, at the intermission.

Green, the Lady Monarch's leading scorer who had accounted for six of Old Dominion's first seven points of the contest, didn't score after the 17th minute of play having to miss the final 12 minutes of the half with foul trouble.

Old Dominion pulled to with in one, 35- 34, with 12:41 remaining in the game after Green nailed both her attempts from the free throw line. Down at the other end of the court on the following play, Hofstra's Sam Bringham sent her shot from downtown through the next putting the Pride ahead for good. Over the final 4:30 of the match-up, the Pride outscored the Lady Monarchs 13-4 for the game's final margin.

Both Old Dominion and Hofstra collected 42 rebounds, including 19 on the offensive glass, but was unable to stick the putbacks. The 17 turnovers by the Lady Monarchs was the first time the Lady Monarchs were under 20 turnovers and the fewest since their January 25th loss to James Madison.

The Pride, who improved to 15-10 overall and 8-3 in the CAA, were led by Fripp with 14 as one of five in double figures. Brigham and Jess Fuller both contributed 12 points in the victory with Niki Williams collecting 11 and Joelle Connelly registering 10.

The Lady Monarchs had three in double figures led by Shadasia Green (Patterson, N.J.) with 14. Canady recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 12 points and 14 boards. Tiffany Green rounded out the double figure scorers with 10.

The Old Dominion women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, February 22nd at George Mason closing out the season series with the Patriots at 2:00 p.m. It will be the Patriot's PINK ZONE game.
