NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated the College of Charleston Saturday afternoon with each squad taking home 11 top finishes. The Lady Monarchs defeated the Cougars, 176-106, to improve to 5-6 overall, while the Monarchs picked up a 192-107 win over the Cougars to up their overall mark to 6-1.
The day kicked off with the women's 200 medley relay team, consisting of April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland), and Liza Moiseeva (Moscow, Russia), capturing the event with a time of 1:49.75. All four Lady Monarchs would go to capture other first place finishes throughout the rest of the meet.
Moiseeva won three other events on the day including the 200 free (1:56.31), the 100 free (54.55), and tying for first in the 50 free (25.45) along with teammate Lauren Johnson (Baltimore, Md.).
Barrientos went on to record wins in both back events. The Virginia Beach native swam to a time of 58.89 in the 100 back and a time of 2:08.42 in the 200 back.
Haraldsdottir brought home victories in both breast events. She posted a time of 1:07.50 in the 100 breast and 2:24.67 in the 200 breast.
Other Lady Monarchs registering top times in the win over the Cougars included Tina Gianni (Bensalem, Pa.) in the 200 fly (2:10.54) and Nowak in the 100 fly (58.10).
On the boards, Jasmine Moore (Yorktown, Va.) scored a 236.02 to capture the 1 meter optionals.
On the men's side, both relay teams placed first. The 200 medley team, comprised of Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), Arni Anrason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland), Vince Pastore (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.), hit the wall .01 second faster than the College of Charleston team for the win in a time of 1:37.32. Arnason and Gangwer were also members of the winning 200 free team, along with Mikeal Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) and Tim Daniels (Oakton, Va.), posting a time of 1:25.72.
Both Mikeal Ramkvist and Arnason would later record wins in two other events. Ramkvist won the 200 free (1:44.53) and 200 back (1:55.66), while Arnason registered the top time in both the 100 breast (56.67) and 200 breast (2:06.14).
Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.) was also a winner in a pair of events. Loccisano posted a time of 21.93 to win the 50 free and swam to a time of 47.22 in the 100 free for the victory.
Also helping the Monarchs to victory was Dan Gallagher (Rochester, N.Y.) in the 200 fly. He posted the top finish, hitting the wall in a time of 1:58.24.
On the boards, Peter Stickl (Falls Church, Va.) swept the diving events scoring a 160.87 on the 1-meter requireds and a 254.10 on the 1-meter optionals.
The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to the pool next weekend. They will take on Steven's Tech on Friday, January 23rd and face Army, George Mason, and American in West Point in a quad-meet on Saturday, January 24th.
