NORFOLK, Va. -- With three of its starters on the bench, the Old Dominion women's basketball team still managed to cruise to its 44th straight victory over the George Mason Patriots with a 73-42 victory Thursday night at the Ted Constant Convocation. Five Lady Monarchs scored in double figures with sophomore Jasmine Parker (Norfolk, Va.) scoring a game-high 16 points, sophomore Sierra Little (Greensboro, N.C.) pouring in a career-high 14 points in her first career start, and senior Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) collecting her sixth double-double of the year with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The win improves ODU to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). With William & Mary falling to VCU, the Lady Monarchs are the only undefeated team left in the CAA. George Mason meanwhile drops its fifth straight falling to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
The Lady Monarchs used a 21-0 run in the first half to break open the game. Old Dominion held the Patriots scoreless for seven and half minutes during the run and would close out the first half of play up 36-17.
The scoring barrage continued in the second half for the Lady Monarchs with Old Dominion leading by as much as 35. The Patriots never pulled any closer than 18 in the second half.
The Lady Monarchs limited the Patriots to just 26.3 percent from the floor (15-of-57), the lowest field goal percentage by an ODU opponent in 2008-09. Additionally, the 42 points scored by the Patriots were the fewest allowed by an Old Dominion opponent this season.
Mason was led by Brittany Poindexter. The lone Patriot in double figures, Poindexter recorded 10 points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Lady Monarchs Thursday night was freshman Mairi Buchan (Stirlingshire, Scotland) with 10, and senior Jen Nuzzo (Newport News, Va.) with 11, one point shy of tying her season mark. Buchan, starting in her fifth game, also added in a season-high seven assists and three steals. Nuzzo tied her career mark with three steals.
The Old Dominion women's basketball team returns to action Sunday against Georgia State in front of the Comcast SportsNet camera. Mike Corey will be on hand for the play-by-play and Jody Lavin-Patrick on color. Tip-off is at noon.
