ODU Defeats Richmond, 65-62

NORFOLK, VA-- Old Dominion (2-3) defeated the Spiders of Richmond (4-3), 65-62tonight at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Red shirt sophomore Keyon Carter(Riviera Beach, FL.) led the Monarchs with his first career double-double of14 points and 10 rebounds. The win ended ODU's three-game losing streak.

ODU jumped out to a 39-26 halftime lead as the Monarchs shot .531 (17-32) fromthe field and outrebounded the Spiders, 21-11. Both Carter and Gerald Lee hadsix rebounds each at halftime. The Spiders who shot .417 (10-24) in the firsthalf were led by David Gonzalvez with 16 points on six-for-nine shooting.

In the second half, ODU led by 16 at 41-25 with 19:19 left and by 14 with 10:38left at 50-36. The Spiders began to cut into ODU's lead and with 4:39 remaining in the game Justin Harper hit two free throws and Richmond was within four at 59-55.ODU pushed it back to seven on a Marsharee Neeley (Greensboro, NC.) jumper anda free throw.

With 1:17 left, Neeley hit one of two free throws to give ODU a 65-60 lead.Richmond cut it to three at 65-62 with 44 seconds after a Kevin Anderson layup.ODU turned the ball over twice. The first time the Monarchs picked up a chargeagainst Richmond, the second time Neely got the rebound after Anderson misseda trey attempt with five second left.

Neely missed the free throws, but Richmond did not much have time to get a goodshot off at the buzzer.

ODU finished the game shooting .473 (26-55) from the floor while Richmond hit.462 (24-52). ODU dominated the boards, 39-25 as Carter led with ten, followedby Lee with six and Ben Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) with five.

Lee finished the game with 12 points, while Darius James scored 11 points forODU. Richmond was led by David Conzalvez with 20 points and nine rebounds, followedby Kevin Anders with 17 points and Justin Harper with 10.

ODU returns to action on Saturday when they host CAA rival Delaware at 4 p.m.in the Constant Center.
