NORFOLK, VA--Junior forward Gerald Lee (Finland) scored 20 points and hauled down seven
Rebounds to lead Old Dominion (6-3) to a 66-54 victory over Winthrop Saturday night. ODU hasnow won five straight games.
Winthrop led at halftime, 22-21 as the Eagles hit .276(8-29) from the floor while the Monarchsshot .238 (5-21). Winthrop also dominated the boards, 24-17 as Mantoris Robinson hauleddown eight in the half.
In the second half, Lee scored ODU's first four points to give the Monarchs a three pointlead at 25-22 with 19:02 left in the game. The contest was tied nine times, the last at 43-43 with6:52 left after Reggie Middleton scored for Winthrop.
The Monarchs took the lead for good, 45-43 on two Jonathan Adams free throws with 6:24 left.ODU would outscore the Eagles, 21-11 the rest of the way. The game was still in doubt at the2:53 mark with ODU clinging to a 54-52 lead. The Monarchs then outscored Winthrop 12-2as Keyon Carter hit a trey, Jonathan Adams two free throws, Darius James hit two free throws andGerald Lee three free throws and a dunk by Ben Finney put the game away.
Gerald Lee hit 10 for 12 from the free throw line and five of seven from the floor, along withthree assists. Keyon Carter scored 10 and Ben Finney added 11. Sophomore guard Darius
James came up with a career high five of ODU's 10 steals. ODU finished the game shooting .413 (19-46)from the floor and .828 (24-29) from the free throw line.
Winthrop was led by Andre Jones with 13 points, followed by Charles Corbin with 12 points andeight rebounds. Winthrop outrebounded the Monarchs, 38-31. Winthrop shot .382(21-55)from the floor and were 3-15 (.200) from the three point range. Winthrop committed 17turnovers to ODU's 12. The Monarchs only had three in the second half.
Lee now leads ODU with 14.9 points per game, 5.6 rebounds along with .864 shootingfrom the free throw line and .603 from the field.
ODU returns to action on Monday night when they host the University of Maryland-EasternShore at 7p.m. in the Constant Center.
