ODU Opens CAA Play With A 56-49 Win Over Delaware

NORFOLK, VA--The ODU Monarchs (3-3/1-0) got 16 points from Gerald Lee and 13 pointsfrom Keyon Carter to defeat Delaware(2-6/0-1), 56-49 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

ODU opened a 27-14 halftime lead with its strong defense that held the Fightin' Blue Hens to .200 (5-25) shooting in the first half. Gerald Lee led ODU with 12 first half points, while sophomore Ben Finney hauled down eight first half rebounds to give ODU a 24-15 edge on the glass.

In the second half, the Monarchs added to the lead and after a basket by Carter with 4:07 left, led by 21,(51-30). Delaware cut into the lead late with three-point baskets from Jawan Carter for the final margin of seven points.

The game was close in the first half until Jonathan Adams hit a trey to put theMonarchs up 11-6 with 14:56 left in the half. Gerald Lee's jumper with 10:05 leftgame the Monarchs a 17-8 lead. Kent Bazemore's dunk and a jumper by MarshareeNeely put ODU up 13 to end the half at 27-14.

Keyon Carter hauled down six rebounds to go along with his 13 points, and Lee also grabbed six boards. Ben Finney led ODU rebounders with nine on the night and Jonathan Adams had six for ODU's 41-34 edge.

Carter, who scored a career high 14 points with 10 rebounds earlier this week against Richmond is now averaging 7.8 points and 5.2 rebounds.

ODU shot .360 (18-50) from the floor, while Delaware was .314 on 16-51 shooting. both teams hit three treys and turned the ball over 20 times.

Gerald Lee who ranks second in the CAA in field goal percentage hit six of ten shots and was four of five from the free throw line. He is now hitting .909 from the line and .569 from the floor. Lee is now averaging 14.7 points and 5.3 reboundsper game. Ben Finney is the team's leading rebounder at 6.7.

Delaware was led by Jawan Carter with 21 points and four steals, while Marc Egerson led all with a game High 12 rebounds. Jim Ledsome added seven boards for Delaware.The Monarchs break for exams before returning to action on Sunday at 4 p.m. against North Carolina Central on Dec. 14.
