NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University junior guard Marsharee Neely (Greensboro, NC.)scored 21 points to lead the Monarchs to a 85-59 exhibition win over Virginia State SaturdayNight. Three other Monarchs, Frank Hassell (Chesapeake, Va.) , Ben Finney (Portsmouth, VA.) and Gerald Lee (Finland) each scored 10 points. Six Monarchs hauled down atleast five rebounds andal l12 Monarchs who played scored.
The Monarchs broke out to a 17 point halftime lead, 42-25 as Neely poured in 17 points on seven-for -eight shooting from the floor. He finished the night nine-for-11 with three assists and fiverebounds.
ODU shot .443 (31-70) from the field and dominated the boards, 58-30 led by Frank Hassellwith eight, followed by Keyon Carter (Rivieria Beach, FL.) and Ben Finney with seven each.
ODU also blocked 14 shots on the night, led by Kent Bazemore with four, followed by two eachFrom Frank Hassell, Nick Wright, Ben Finney, and Chris Cooper (Woodbridge, VA.). The Monarchs biggest lead was 34 at 63-29 with 11:37 left in the game.
Virginia State from the CIAA was led by Harvey Mills with 12 points and Michael Johnsonwith 10. Leon Willis led the Trojans with six rebounds and Christopher Washington hadfour assists. The Trojans shot .300 (18-60) from the floor.
The Monarchs open the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 16 at Charlotte.
