LADY MONARCH MOMENTS:
The Lady Monarchs open the season at the World Vision Classic hosted by the University of Texas. Old Dominion will take on St. Mary's in the first ever meeting between the Lady Monarchs and Gaels on Saturday, followed by a match-up with Dayton on Sunday, and a contest with host Texas on Sunday.
Old Dominion is coming off a 31-5 season and an appearance in the NCAA "Sweet 16". The 31 wins were the most since the 1996-97 season and the team's "Sweet 16" appearance was the first since 2002.
Returning to the squad are two starters and eight letterwinners. The two starters returning are First Team Preseason All-CAA selection and CAA leading blocker Tiffany Green and Second Team Preseason All-CAA pick and CAA assist leader Jazzmin Walters. Among the returning letterwinners are Second Team Preseason All-CAA honoree and CAA field goal percentage leader Jessica Canady and 2008 All-CAA Rookie Team member Jasmine Parker.
Five new faces will be sporting the Blue and White in Texas. Old Dominion welcomes five freshmen in 5-11 forward Margaret Harvey, 6-2 center Mairi Buchan, 5-10 freshmen guards Jo Guilford and Pryncess Tate-Dublin, and 5-8 guard Rachel DeMita. Tia Lewis, a sophomore transfer from Central Florida will be sitting out the 2008-09 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
The Longhorns will represent the first of five ranked squads from the Preseason AP and ESPN/USA Today Polls the Lady Monarchs will face - 3/5 Maryland, #7/6 Tennessee, #13/13 Texas, #15/15 Virginia, and RV/RV Michigan State.
Austin has many fine memories for Lady Monarch fans. The Old Dominion women's basketball team brought home the 1985 NCAA title by defeating Northeast Louisiana, 57-47, in the national semifinals and Georgia, 70-65, in the championship game in Austin.

ABOUT ST. MARY'S:
St. Mary's out of Moraga, California sported a 15-17 overall mark and 6-8 record in the West Coast Conference last season. The Gaels welcome back nine letterwinners from last year's squad,. including three starters. Jontelle Mith, a 5-5 senior guard and two-time All-WCC selection, led the Gaels with 16.8 points per game returns as well as Louella Tomlinson, a 6-4 sophomore forward, who poured in 13.0 points along with 6.3 rebounds, and 4.9 blocks per game as the nation's leader in blocks St. Mary's was picked to finish fourth in the West Coast Conference in the preseason poll.

ABOUT DAYTON:
The Dayton Flyers are coming off one of its most successful seasons in history. The 2007-08 version of the Flyers danced their way to the WNIT, captured votes in the AP Top 25 Poll, and posted the most wins in a season. Dayton finished last season at 25-9 overall and 9-5 in the Atlantic-10 with a trip to the conference tournament semifinals. The Flyers return just one starter, but have six letterwinners coming back to the hardwood from last year's squad. The lone returning starter is Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection Kristin Daugherty, a 6-0 sophomore forward who started all but three games as a freshman and ranked third on the team in both scoring (9.3 ppg.) and blocked shots (0.56 bpg.) and was second in rebounding (5.0 rpg.). Also returning to the roster is junior Kendel Ross, who as Dayton's top reserve the last two season, averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds a season ago.
SERIES WITH DAYTON:
Old Dominion and Dayton have only met one other time. The Lady Monarchs defeated the the Flyers, 79-55, in the Reebok Roundball Classic back on December 29, 1987 in Wendy Larry's first season as head coach of the Old Dominion women's basketball program.

ABOUT TEXAS:
The Texas Longhorns finished out the 2007-08 campaign 22-13 overall and 7-9 in the Big 12 under first-year head coach Gail Goestenkors The Longhorns, who enter this weekend ranked 13th in both the AP and ESPN/USA Preseason Polls, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to eventual Lady Monarch "Sweet 16" opponent Connecticut, 89-55. Texas returns four starters and eight total letterwinners from last years team including Brittainey Raven, a 6-0 junior Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention guard, who poured in 15.2 points and 10.6 assists a year ago. Also returning are starters Ashley Lindsey, a 6-4 senior center who knocked in 11.0 points and hauled down 6.7 rebounds per game and Carla Cortijo, a 5-7 senior guard who averaged 10.1 points and 4.9 assists per contest. The Longhorns were picked second in the Preseason Big 12 Poll, behind Oklahoma.
SERIES WITH TEXAS:
Monday night the Lady Monarch and Longhorns will meet for the 11th time in history. Old Dominion leads the all-time series 7-3 and have won the last two meetings. It will be the first meeting between the two squads since 1996 when Old Dominion defeated Texas, 98-61 back on January 5, 1996 at the ODU Fieldhouse. The Lady Monarchs are heading to Austin for the first time since 1994. When in Austin last, the Lady Monarchs defeated the Longhorns, 73-70, on February 10, 1994.
RANK `EM UP - AP POLL:
The Old Dominion women's basketball team will head into the 2008-09 season ranked No. 25 by the Associated Press. Five opponents on the 2008-09 Lady Monarch slate are featured in the poll, including a pair in the top ten. Maryland, the 2006 NCAA Champions, are seated at No. 3 with defending NCAA champions Tennessee coming in at No. 7. Also in the Top 25 are No. 13 Texas and No. 15 Virginia, while Michigan State is among those teams receiving votes.
RANK `EM UP - ESPN/USA TODAY POLL:
The Old Dominion women's basketball team received more preseason recognition when they were ranked No. 20 in the Preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. As with the Preseason AP Poll, five future Old Dominion opponents appear in the poll led by 2006 NCAA defending champion Maryland at No. 5 and defending NCAA Champion Tennessee at No. 6. Also in the Top 25 of the coaches' poll is Texas at No. 13 and Virginia, who the Lady Monarchs will face in the 2008-09 home opener on Homecoming on November 21st, tied for No. 15. Michigan State, the 2008 WNIT runner-up, is receiving votes.
PRESEASON AWARDS:
Three Lady Monarchs were named to Preseason All-CAA teams. Senior forward/center Tiffany Green was a First Team selection. A First Team All-CAA pick a season ago, she averaged 11.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and led the CAA in blocks. Senior guard Jazzmin Walters and junior Jessica Canady were Second Team picks. Walters led the CAA in assists, while Canady averaged 11.0 points as the Lady Monarchs' "sixth woman" and led the league in field goal percentage.
CAA PRESEASON POLL - WE'RE #1:
Old Dominion, which has captured the past 17 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball titles, was picked to repeat as conference champion in 2008-09 according to a vote of the league's coaches, sports information directors and media. The Lady Monarchs, advanced to the "Sweet 16" and earned a 31-5 overall record last season, were followed in the voting by Virginia Commonwealth, James Madison, Drexel, Towson, UNC-Wilmington, Delaware, Georgia State, Northeastern, William & Mary, Hofstra, and George Mason.
SEASON OPENERS:
The Lady Monarchs are 26-13 in season openers including last year's season opening victory over Middle Tennessee on Nov. 10, 76-68. It was the Lady Monarchs first season opening victory since the 2001-02 season, a 82-26 victory over Towson welcoming the Tigers to the CAA in their first conference meeting following a move from the America East Conference.
HOME COURT STREAK:The Lady Monarchs are tied with Hartford for thethe nation's top active home court win streak. OldDominion has won 26 straight home contests datingback to the Dec. 20, 2006, 72-55, victory overnational runner-up Rutgers. ODU's last loss at theTed Constant Convocation Center was againstnational champion Tennessee, 59-75, back on Dec.22, 2006.
CAA HOME COURT STREAK:The Lady Monarchs have won 34 straight homeCAA contests dating back to the January 14, 2005,78-59, victory over Virginia Commonwealth. ODU'slast conference loss at the Ted Constant ConvocationCenter was against Delaware, 70-73, on January 9,2005. Old Dominion holds a 161-2 home CAAmark.
UNDEFEATED - AT HOME:
Old Dominion closed out the 2007-08 season with a 16-0 home record. They finished non-conference play at 5-0, CAA play at 9-0, and also earned two NCAA Tournament victories.
RACKING UP THE WIN COLUMN:
The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs finished last season with a 31-5 overall mark. It was the most winsfor the program since the 1996-97 season when theLady Monarchs captured a 34-2 overall mark andreached the championship game of the NCAATournament. Old Dominion has posted six 30+win seasons in history.
500 AND COUNTING:
Old Dominion head coach Wendy Larry crackeda half-century mark last season. In Old Dominion's 74-51 CAA semifinal victory over fifth-seeded Towson, Larry earned her 500th win at the helm of the Lady Monarch program. To date, Larry has captured a 503-165 mark in 21 seasons as the head coach of the Lady Monarchs. 501 was just as sweet as it gaveher and her team its 17th consecutive CAA title. Larry reached her 500th career win last seasonduring the 2006-07 season against Chicago State and has a 552-196 overall mark in 24 seasons as the leader of the Old Dominion, Arizona State, and Virginia Wesleyan programs.
EXHIBITION RECAP - SHAW UNIVERSITY:
Junior Jessica Canady's 22 points led a trio of Lady Monarchs in double figures as the Old Dominion women's basketball team concluded the exhibition portion of its schedule with a 69-48 win over Shaw University on November 10th. Old Dominion held a 35-23 edge at halftime. Shaw was within six, 20-14, with 6:37 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Monarchs quickly established a double-digit lead shortly thereafter for good. The veterans continued to shine as senior Tiffany Green added in 13 and Shadasia Green contributed 10 points to go along with Canady's game-high 22 points. The posts helped Old Dominion outscore Shaw, 41-16, in the paint. Assist machines Jen Nuzzo and Jazzmin Walters dished out five assists apiece with Walters also collected five steals. Mairi Buchan led the newcomers with nine points and five boards. Old Dominion was untraditionally outrebounded, 43-38, by the Bears. Canady led the Lady Monarchs with six rebounds.
EXHIBITION RECAP - UNIVERSITY OF D.C.:
The Old Dominion women's basketball rolled to a 53-point exhibition win on November 3rd at the Ted Constant Convocation Center with a 79-26 win over the University of D.C. Four Lady Monarchs reached double figures led by Preseason First Team All-CAA selection Tiffany Green with 17 points. Green went 5-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the stripe. The CAA leader in blocks a year ago also registered five rejections on the evening. The Old Dominion defense held the Firebirds to 20 percent shooting and the bench to just four points. LaQuanda Brandon chipped in eight points to lead the University of D.C. The Lady Monarchs used a 22-4 run, including a string of 13 unanswered points, to take a 24-6 edge with 7:43 remaining in the first half. Old Dominion cruised to a 40-12 halftime lead and ended the second half outscoring the Firebirds, 39-14. Joining Green in double figures were sophomore Jasmine Parker with 16, junior Jessica Canady with 15, and junior Jazzmin Walters adding in 11. Canady, a Preseason Second Team All-CAA selection, went a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.The two Greens led Old Dominion on the boards as the Lady Monarchs outboarded the University of D.C., 41-29. Tiffany and Shadasia Green hauled in nine rebounds a piece.

There's only team on the 2008-09 schedule the Lady Monarchs have never faced is St. Mary's. The two squads will face each other in the 2008-09 home opener.
