NORFOLK, Va. -- ODU was bumped out of the CAA Women's Soccer Tournament tonight as the Lady Monarchs (14-4-2) suffered a heartbreaking shootout loss in a 2-2 tie to the Hofstra Pride (10-7-3). The quarterfinal matchup between the 4-seed Lady Monarchs and 5-seed Pride ended in a 2-2 draw and Hofstra won the shootout, 4-2. The Pride will advance to play top-seeded William & Mary on Friday at 7:00 pm.
ODU jumped in front of the Pride, scoring the first two goals of the contest in the first 18 minutes. Sophomore Ashley Kukura scored her fifth goal of the season on assists from seniors Katie Watson and Shavon Knight to give ODU the early lead. Watson trapped the ball at the top of the box and found Knight on the right side, and then into Kukura for the score.
Only seven minutes later, freshman Victoria Johnson added her ninth tally of the season, on Watson's second assist of the game. With the assist, Watson matched her career high in points with 33 and set a new career-high in assists with nine.
Just before the end of the half, Hofstra would cut the lead in half with a penalty kick goal. A Hofstra player was tripped in the box and led to Jess Crankshaw's first goal of the season on the PK. Then, just over six minutes into the second half, the Pride would tie the game on a corner kick. Senior defender took her first corner kick of the day and placed it right in the center of the box where Courtney Breen got a head on it for the score.
The game would be played fairly evenly the rest of the way, through both overtimes. ODU had several scoring chances late in the second half, as senior defender Elizabeth Brewster nailed a shot into the wall on a free kick just outside the 18. THen, with 3:25 remaining, Knight made a pass to Watson inside the box, leaving the senior forward all alone with the keeper. She took a hard shot, but senior keeper for the Pride, Krystal Robens, made a fantastic jumping save and the ball glanced off the crossbar.
In the second overtime period, ODU saw the best scoring chance in extra time as Knight again served the ball into the box from the right side, this time directly in front of the goalmouth. Both Watson and senior Janna Pearson just missed the touch on what would have been the gamewinner with under five minutes to play.
With the game at a draw, the decision would come on penalty kicks. The first two players for both teams would make their shots, with Kukura and Brewster knocking home goals for ODU. Then, on the third shot, Hofstra senior Edel Malone scored hers, but ODU junior Jodi Knorowski sent her shot high, giving the Pride a 3-2 edge. Then, on the fourth shot, Laura Greene, a freshman reserve put hers in the net, setting up a deciding shot for Pearson. The ODU senior sent a shot to the left side but Robens made the save to seal victory for the Pride.
The Pride will advance to play William & Mary on Friday night at 7:00 pm. The Lady Monarchs record drops to 14-4-2 with the tie with an RPI rating of 58.
