NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team managed to outshoot and out corner No. 6 North Carolina in the second half of Saturday afternoon's field hockey contest at the Powhatan Sports Complex, however it was not enough to overcome the Tar Heels. North Carolina collected three first half goals en-route to downing the Lady Monarchs 3-1.

Sophomore Samantha Richardson (Vancouver, Canada) captured the lone Lady Monarch goal off a rebound in the game's 49th minute. Richardson's goal, her second of the season, came as collected sophomore Amanda Bieber (Elizabethtown, Pa.) shot that bounced off Tar Heel keeper, Brianna O'Donnell.

Despite the second-half surge, which saw Richardson thwart the shutout and the Lady Monarchs outshoot the Tar Heels, 6-3, and take five penalty corners, as opposed to North Carolina's one, the Tar Heels had established a 3-0 edge 16 minutes into the game.

Illse Davids scored the Tar Heels first tally five minutes into the game. She hit a hard blast from the top left of the circle that managed to find the gap between the right post and an outstretched Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) in the ODU cage.

Just over six minutes later, North Carolina went 2-0 on a breakaway. Taryn Gjurich tore into the circle and passed to Teryn Brill for the score.

North Carolina went up 3-0 less than five minutes later on a penalty corner opportunity. Kate School inserted the ball to Britt van Beek on the stop with Kiki Norbruis striking the ball into the Lady Monarch cage.

The Tar Heels outshot Old Dominion, 20-6, in the game with Driscoll, the Lady Monarch keeper, making 12 saves and the defense adding in a season-high four defensive saves. Junior Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) registered two defensive saves, along with stops by junior Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) and sophomore Paige Clutter (Chambersburg, Pa.). Shea currently leads Old Dominion with five defensive saves on the year.

North Carolina's Jackie Kintzer started the game in goal, while Brianna O'Donnell served in the cage in the second half and recorded four saves.

The Old Dominion field hockey team concludes the 2008 regular season on Sunday, November 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs will take on CAA rival William & Mary. A victory over the Tribe will give ODU the No. 3 seed at next week's CAA Tournament, while a loss will give ODU the the No. 4 seed. Additionally, prior to the start of the game, senior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) will be honored on "Senior Day".
