FAIRFAX, Va. -- The ODU Lady Monarchs (14-3-1/7-2-1) responded after a loss to Towson with a 2-0 win over the Patriots of George Mason University (4-13-1/1-8-1). The win puts ODU in a tie for third with Hofstra with one game left to play before the CAA Tournament. Senior Katie Watson completed a stellar weekend with two goals, giving her three goals and an assist as she factored into all four tallies for ODU this weekend.
Watson scored the first goal in the 36th minute on a corner kick. Senior Caroline Brown, having just entered minutes earlier, took a shot in the box off the corner and Watson cleaned up the rebound for the score. It was her 11th goal of the season and Brown's first assist.
In the second half, ODU senior keeper Lauren Tupman faced three shots on goal and saved all of them. She did not allow a goal for her ninth shutout of the season as the team set a new mark for blankings in a season, with 11. The previous record was ten shutouts in 2006.
Watson would get her second tally in the 77th minute off a pass from sophomore midfielder Ashley Kukura. George Mason keeper Kelly Keelan got a hand on it, but not enough to stop the goal. Keelan made two saves in the game.
Defender Jessica Paris and midfielder Leslie Cabe led the way for Mason taking three shots apiece, while Pattie Benner added two on-goal off the bench.
Old Dominion was led offensively by Watson, though four players got shots on-goal in the game. With the second goal, Watson has now her second 30-point season of her career. Tupman lowered her league-leading goals against average to 0.71 while posting her ninth solo shutout.
ODU will head to Williamsburg for the final regular season game of 2008 to face the first place Tribe of William & Mary (13-5-1/8-2-0). Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm.
