TOWSON, Md. -- The 28th ranked Lady Monarchs (13-3-1/6-2-1) were upset on the road behind a last second penalty kick to Towson (4-12-1/1-7-1) to end an 11-game winless streak for the Tigers. With just three seconds remaining, Towson was awarded a penalty kick and Rosie Goldberg scored the gamewinner. ODU was led by senior points leader Katie Watson, who scored a goal and an assist in the game.
The Lady Monarchs started the game with a solid goal in the seventh minute of play, senior Janna Pearson's second of the season. Freshman Victoria Johnson received a pass in the middle of the field at the top of the box and one-touched it to Watson in the box. Watson turned and found Pearson on the far side who sent a low shot past the keeper for the score.
The rest of the first half was relatively flat on both sides, until the 45th minute. Towson was awarded a penalty kick with under a minute to play in the half as senior Marilee Mastaler pulled on her mark in the box. Danielle Rosanova took the kick for Towson and sent it into the right side. Senior goalkeeper for ODU, Lauren Tupman, guessed right but the ball was just passed her outstretched arms.
Coming out of the half, both teams were aggressive offensively. Towson scored just 2:53 into the second half, taking several shots blocked by defenders before Kaysi Ward sent one home to go ahead 2-1.
Just over a minute later, though, ODU would tie the game again with a long goal from Watson. ODU was awarded a free kick from about 40 yards out on the left side and Watson sent a hard shot that glanced off a defender and into the right side of the goal.
The Lady Monarchs remained the aggressor for the remainder of the match, outshooting Towson 13-9 in the game. The best opportunity for ODU came with 10 minutes remaining, as junior Jodi Knorowski sent a shot into the right post.
With just 13 seconds remaining, a foul was called on ODU, giving Towson a free kick from their own side of the field and no time to organize. A defender was able to get a long ball into the box and as ODU cleared it and time expired, the whistle blew, awarding Towson a PK on an apparent foul in the box.
Again, Tupman guessed right, but the ball off the foot of Goldberg was just too long for her to make the save. She had three saves in the game.
The loss was the first since a 2-1 setback to UNC Wilmington on September 28. It was the first win for Towson in CAA play and the first win since a 1-0 victory over Rider on September 4.
The Lady Monarchs will take the field at George Mason on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Live stats will be available at gomason.com.
