NORFOLK, Va. -- The ODU women's soccer team (12-2-1/5-1-1) earned their third overtime victory of the season in come-from-behind fashion with a thrilling 2-1 victory over James Madison (9-4-2/5-2-0) on Friday night. Senior Shavon Knight led the way with an assist on the game-tying goal in the 87th minute of play, and then scoring the gamewinner in the 100th minute, with just 35 seconds remaining in the first overtime. ODU sophomore Ashley Kukura scored the equalizer and rookie Victoria Johnson and senior Janna Pearson added assists.

James Madison would hold the edge in possession for most of the first half, and stayed the aggressor putting four shots on goal. ODU managed just one in the first half, and both teams would come up empty into the break.

In the 61st minute, though, James Madison's leading scorer would put them on the board. Teresa Rynier added to her league-high assist total with a helper on Corky Julien's goal. Julien sent a low shot into the left corner for the score.

ODU would step up the pressure in the latter half of the game, though, taking nine shots in the second frame, while allowing just six. In the last ten minutes, ODU was constantly in the JMU box, but were unable to convert.

In the 87th minute, though, ODU re-grouped with a ball to Knight on the right side. Knight put a beautiful centering pass right to the chest of Johnson, who trapped it to the feet of Kukura. The sophomore midfielder then unleashed a liner into the upper 90 for the game-tying goal with less than three minutes to go in the game.

In the overtime period, Julien had a chance to win it for the Dukes with a 1-on-1 with the keeper, but her shot went wide right.

ODU continued to push offensively, again with Knight. Knight dribbled the ball up the left side before making a cross to the far side of the box to Pearson. Janna had time and waited for her teammates to get into the box, and then placed a perfect ball to the center of the goalmouth. Knight cut off the goalkeeper and got a heel on it, poking it into the right side of the net. It was her fourth gamewinner of the season, the second in overtime.

With the win, ODU remains unbeaten in overtime games this season, posting a 3-0-1 record in extra time. ODU also broke the team record for assists in a season with 40 on the year. Knight teetered back into the team lead for points with 25 with a team high nine goals and seven assists.

ODU will take the field in another integral CAA match on Sunday against VCU (8-6-1/4-2-1). Kick-off is set for 1:00 pm. The Rams nearly defeated William & Mary on Thursday night, but were defeated with two goals in the final five minutes. ODU and VCU are both in the thick of a tight race atop the CAA standings.
