NEWARK, Del. -- Senior goalkeeper Lauren Tupman tied the all-time leader in career shutouts with a spectacular effort between the pipes as Old Dominion (10-2/3-1) defeated Delaware (4-6-1/1-3) for the first time in program history, 2-0. Freshman Victoria Johnson scored the gamewinner in the 13th minute off assists from senior scoring leaders Shavon Knight and Katie Watson.
The win was the first ever against Delaware, who came in boasting a 0-7-1 advantage in the all-time series. The victory also marked the third time in the last four years head coach Joe Pereira's team won at least 10 games.
ODU opened the game aggressively and would get the eventual gamewinner just 12:15 into the match. Knight had her back to the goal just past midfield when she put a great move on her defender to get by and take her space. She passed the ball to Watson at the top of the box who made a nifty heel flick into the box to Johnson, who scored with a shot over the diving keeper.
Johnson's goal put her in sole possession of second all-time in freshman scoring, with 17 points on the year.
The first half was punctuated, though, by stellar goalkeeping from senior Lauren Tupman. Three times in the first half, the senior netminder was forced into a one-on-one with one of the league's premiere scorers, Amy Pickard. In the 17th minute, Tupman came out and had a slide tackle to divert the scoring chance and in the 28th minute, Pickard came into the box and tried to scoot a low shot to Tupman's right, but she made a diving save.
Tupman would also seal up the second half for her sixth shutout on the season, tying the all-time career leader (Sharon McLellan '96-98) with 14. Her offense garnered an insurance goal just minutes into the second half off a corner kick.
Senior Janna Pearson took a short kick to freshman Jocelyn Weidner, who turned the ball to Watson, who again made a terrific flick, this time to Elizabeth Brewster. Brewster lofted a shot to the back corner for the score.
Delaware was led by Caitlyn Germain and Pickard, each with three shots, one on-goal. Annie Bevan played the whole game in goal, making two saves and allowing the two scores.
Tupman lowered her league-leading goals against average to 0.68 with the shutout, making three saves in the game. Watson had two assists in the game to tie for the team-lead in helpers with Knight. They each have eight goals and six assists for a team-high 22 points this season.
Old Dominion returns home for four straight home conference games, starting with a 7:00 kickoff against the Hofstra Pride (7-4-1/4-0), the top team in the CAA. Hofstra has notched 10 straight shutouts against CAA opponents.
