NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (8-1/1-0) increased their shutout streak to five games at home this season as they shut out the Panthers of Georgia State (7-3/0-1) in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) season opener Friday night. Five different Lady Monarchs scored in the match on six assists as freshman Rachael Carroll notched her first career points with two assists in the game.

The Lady Monarchs posted five goals in the match, coming from five different players. Four of those players would also tally assists in the match. Senior Katie Watson, sophomores Ashley Kukura and Kelsey Williams and freshman Victoria Johnson all had one goal and one assist in the game.

The gamewinner would come from Johnson in the 26th minute of play. Johnson's fifth goal of the season came off a nifty pass from Katie Watson at the top of the box, who had received a long pass from Ashley Kukura. One-on-one with the keeper, Johnson scored for what would prove to be the winner.

Just over six minutes later, Watson would get her seventh of the season on Carroll's first career assist. Also assisting on the play was Williams, with a perfect cross from the left corner to the center of the box and Carroll's feet.

Again, it was just minutes later when Jenni Purdum, a senior for ODU, laced a hard line drive from 30 yards out on the right side of the field that found the upper 90 just past the outstretched arms of the Georgia State keeper.

In the second half, Kukura and Williams would add goals of their own off assists from senior Shavon Knight, Carroll and Johnson. The Lady Monarchs put six of its 12 shots on-goal, scoring on five of the chances.

Georgia State, after starting the season a school-record 6-0, has lost three of its last four games. The team managed eight shots, a season-high for opponents at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium, but only one shot on-goal. After the break, the Panthers mustered just two shots. ODU held the Panthers leading scorer Kay Harbrueger, ranked second in the nation in points per game, to just three shots in the contest.

The Lady Monarchs extended their home shutout streak to five straight games, outscoring opponents 20-0 in home games this season. It was the sixth shutout of the season, and fifth solo for senior goalkeeper Lauren Tupman, who brought her season goals against average down to 0.58.

ODU will begin a three-game road swing as they head to UNC Wilmington for a match on Sunday. Wilmington lost to William & Mary, 3-2, in its CAA season opener Friday night. Kick-off Sunday is set for 2:00 pm.
