DURHAM, N.C. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team allowed just one goal by No. 9 Duke Sunday afternoon, but it would be the only tally the Blue Devils would need as they shutout the Lady Monarchs, 1-0.
The loss dropped Old Dominion to 1-6 on the year. Duke, meanwhile, put together its third straight win and improved to 6-2 overall.
The Blue Devil goal came in the game's 57th minute of action when Marian Dickinson took a feed along the right side of the circle from Susie Ferger into the left side of the cage for the score.
Old Dominion goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made seven saves in the loss. Her counterpart, Ali Comolli, made two stops.
Duke outshot Old Dominion, 18-6. Senior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) led the way with three shots, two of them on goal. Junior Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) recorded two shots.
The Blue Devils registered a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
The Old Dominion field hockey team, in the midst of a four-game road trip, heads to Boston, Massachusetts next weekend. The Lady Monarchs will meet Boston University on Saturday, September 27th and then open up Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action on Sunday, September 28th against Northeastern.
