Charlottesville, Va. - The ODU women's tennis team kicked off its fall campaign today at the UVA Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville. The Lady Monarchs posted a 2-1 mark in doubles play and a 2-4 record in singles action during day one.
Doubles play saw Marija Citic and freshman Irina Dementyeva earn an 8-3 victory over Alejandra Guerra and Arielle Vanstrolly of UNCG, while Charleen Haarhoff and Nadine Fahoum defeated Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey and Maria Sorbello, 8-2.
In singles action Dementyeva and Haarhoff registered ODU's only victories of the day with their three-set victories. Dementyeva downed Marshall's Kristina Koprcina 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and Haarhoff dropped the first set before rebounding to defeat South Carolina's Gina Schofield 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Play continues Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. The tournament concludes Sunday, with play beginning at 9 a.m.
