RADFORD, Va. -- The Lady Monarchs women's soccer team (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season Sunday as the Radford Highlanders (4-0-2) took a 2-1 victory. It was the first loss for Old Dominion to Radford in 11 matchups all-time, with ODU holding a 9-1-1 advantage. ODU's Elizabeth Brewster scored the game's first goal in the 29th minute of play, but Radford answered under two minutes later to tie and then scored the gamewinner in the 77th minute.

In the 28th minute, head coach Joe Pereira sent in a host of subs, including midfielder Jodi Knorowski. Under a minute later, the Lady Monarchs had a corner kick which Knorowski played into the box and the Highlanders failed to clear as Brewster then ripped a low line drive from just outside the box for the score.

ODU would not hold the lead for long, though, as under two minutes later, Radford would score on a header off a cross from the left side. Ashley Johnson scored on the pass from SharDavia Bell.

In the second half, Old Dominion put constant pressure on the Radford defense, putting up 16 shots in the frame while Radford managed just one. However, Radford would need just the one to win, as Melony Davis got a long through ball from Jill Boyer for the score. The shot glanced off the far post and into the goal for the gamewinner.

The Lady Monarchs outshot the Highlanders 22-5 in the game, maintaining a season-long trend of outshooting opponents, now at 142-37 on the year. The trend is especially significant in the second half, as ODU has outshot opponents 82-15 in the second period. Four different Lady Monarchs managed three shots in the game, but the team only put seven on frame.

Radford was led by Johnson, who took three of the five team shots, including her goal.

ODU returns home for its final two non-conference games of the season next weekend as they host the University of Akron Friday night at 6:00 pm and NC State Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
