ABOUT OLD DOMINION: The No. 20 Lady Monarchs (0-4) are not only looking to earn their first win of the 2008 season on Saturday, but will also be opening a new chapter in history as they take on the Richmond Spiders in the first ever game at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Game time is 1:00 p.m. Senior Katelyn Smither has scored Old Dominion's lone goal of the season thus far, coming in the loss to the second-ranked Maryland Terps last week. In goal, senior Kelly Driscoll has made a CAA-leading 36 saves while recording a 4.00 goals against average and .720 save percentage.
ABOUT RICHMOND: The Richmond Spiders enter Saturday's contest with a 1-3 overall mark. After opening up the 2008 season with an 8-3 victory at home against Ball State, the Spiders dropped their next three games including a 6-1 loss against Miami (OH), a 2-1 setback to No. 16 Princeton, and a 2-1 loss to Columbia.Freshman Katelin Peterson leads the Spiders with four goals. She was named the Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Week on September 2nd after tallying goals against Ball State and Miami (OH). Senior goalkeeper Becca Weaver has started all four contests for the Spiders, posting a 3.67 goals against average and .655 save percentage along with 19 saves.
ALL-TIME SERIES: The Lady Monarchs lead the all-time series 27-0.
LAST TIME VS. RICHMOND: Old Dominion and Richmond last squared off back on September 9th, 2006 with the third-ranked Lady Monarchs shutting out the No. 19 Spiders, 3-0, in the 2006 home opener. Former Lady Monarchs Darcy Pinchbeck and Jo Ann van Aswegen each captured goals in the win. Old Dominion outshot Richmond 12-4, but the Spiders did outcorner the Lady Monarchs, 5-4. Goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll, in her first season in the cage, earned her first career shutout making two saves in the win. Richmond's Weaver made all seven saves for the Spiders, while Jacki Raithel was in goal of 20:46 of action.
IN THE POLLS: After opening the season with four straight losses, the Lady Monarchs fell to No. 20 in the STX/NFHCA Poll. Richmond, meanwhile, is receiving votes in the STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll.
NEARING THE HALF CENTURY MARK: Head coach Beth Anders enters the Richmond game with a 492-96-7 overall record, needing just eight victories to become the first Division I coach and second field hockey coach overall to reach the 500 win milestone.
