NORFOLK, VA--The 33rd annual Stihl Soccer Classic begins this weekend, Sept. 12 and 14 with host Old Dominion, Massachusetts, Central Florida andWilliam and Mary, at the ODU Soccer Complex.action begins Friday, Sept. 12 with William and Mary against Central Florida at 4:30 followed by theODU-Massachusetts match at 7 p.m. On Sunday, W&M will play UMass at 12 noon followed by ODUand UCF at 2:30.
The Minutemen of Massachusetts compiled a 17-8 record and reached the NCAA College Cup semi-finals last year. UMass (2-1) is led by 2007 third team NSCAA/adidas All-American and UMBRO National Player of the Year, goalkeeper Zack Simmons. He currently has a 0.96 goals against average. Senior forward PrinceOfosu leads the team with two goals and sophomore midfielder Ben Arikian is second with one goal, and one assist for three points. UMass is coached by Sam Koch, now in his 18th season.
The Monarchs (1-2-1) who have reached the NCAA round of 16 each of the last two years rallied to defeat UNC Greensboro, 2-1 Sunday. Both of ODU's losses werethird ranked SMU and 11th ranked St.John's. Leading the Monarchs is pre-season All-CAA, Co-Player of The Year, and pre-season All-American Trevor Banks (Madison, WI.) leads the Monarchs into this weekends event, as well as 2007 All-CAA Rookieselection T.J. Beaulieu(Apex, NC.) . The sophomore forward scored two goals for ODU In the second half against UNCG.
Junior Midfielders Dylan Montambo (Chesapeake, VA.), and Nane Joseph (Yaounde, Cameroon) assisted on the goals. The Monarchs lost All-CAA goalkeeperEvan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.)for the season with a broken bone in his left elbow. Sophomore Brennan Kirkpatrick(Shreveport, LA.) and freshman Michael Roura (Middletown, NJ.) have stepped into the keeper position playing in two matches each for ODU. Kirkpatrick has a 0.45 goals against average in two matches, including a shutout.
William and Mary (1-0) is led by junior forward Price Thomas. A second team All-CAA selection in 2007,Thomas scored seven goals and assisted on three others. He is a pre-season All-CAA selection as well.Junior Andrew Hoxie had a goal and an assist in the Tribes 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro.
Central Florida (1-2) is led by 2007 All-Conference USA selection Ryan Roushandel, and sophomore keeper Sean Johnson. Johnson was named Conference USA'sDefensive Player of the week after a six save match in a win over Stetson. The Knights are coached by Bryan Cunningham who is in his secondseason.
In the previous 32 years, ODU has won the Queen's cup 12 times and William and Mary has won theevent three times. The Queen's Cup was originally presented to ODU in 1976 by the British Royal Navy in honor of Queen Elizabeth.
