Women's Soccer Rolls to Fifth Straight; Drops Elon 6-0

NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion posted its third shutout victory of the season with a 6-0 rout of the Elon Phoenix (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon, improving to 5-0 on the season. For the second game of the weekend, ODU allowed just one shot on goal and five total shots and pestered the opponents defense, taking 18 shots with 13 on-net. Senior Shavon Knight scored two goals and had two assists, as did freshman Victoria Johnson who nailed her first career gamewinner in the 15th minute of play.

Elon hung around with the Lady Monarchs in the first half, matching the Lady Monarchs shot for shot. Each had four looks in the first half, with ODU scoring on two of the four chances. Just over 14 minutes into the game, senior Janna Pearson crossed the ball to the far post to Knight, who touched the ball across the goal mouth to Johnson for the eventual gamewinner.

Just over 21 minutes in, Knight would score her first of the match, on a give and go from Jodi Knorowski on the right side of the field. Old Dominion would take the 2-0 lead into the locker room as senior keeper Lauren Tupman made one save in the frame.

In the second half, ODU applied pressure from the outset, taking a total of 14 shots in the half, while allowing just one. In the 62nd minute, senior Katie Watson received a pass from Johnson in the box and knocked home her third goal of the season. Then, in the final ten minutes, ODU would send three more past Elon's senior goalkeeper Lizz Johnson. Ashley Kukura scored her first of the season, followed by the second goal of the game for both Knight and Johnson.

Tupman played the entire game earning her third shutout of the season and 11th career blanking. The defense, led by seniors Marilee Mastaler and Elizabeth Brewster, with freshman Lisa Bernardini and juniors Brittney Kortz and Saratu Dodo continues to lock up opponents in the second half. In five games, the ODU defense has allowed just 32 shots and under three per game in the second frame.

Elon was led by Alanna Winsper, who took two shots, and Alix Heinicke took the only shot on-goal for the Phoenix. Sydney Little took the loss after a two-goal, one-save first half while Lizz Johnson played the second 45 minutes giving up four goals with six saves.

ODU returns to the field next Sunday as they travel to Radford University (2-0-1). Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
