CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 8 Old Dominion field hockey team was shutout, 2-0, by the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers scored twice in the latter part of the second half of action to claim victory over the Lady Monarchs for the first time since 1996.
The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 0-4 on the season, while the Cavaliers improved to a perfect 4-0.
Once again, Old Dominion and its opponent played to a 0-0 halftime score. The stalemate was broken with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest off the stick of the Cavalier's Paige Selenski. Two and a half minutes later, Virginia's Michelle Vittese added in an insurance goal.
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made 12 saves in the loss, one save shy of her career-high. Virginia's Devon Burnley and Amy Desjadon combined for the shutout with Desjadon making the Cavalier's lone save.
Old Dominion was outshot, 23-5, and outcornered 7-5.
The Old Dominion field hockey team will return to action on Saturday, September 13th against Richmond as they officially open the brand, new state-of-the-art Powhatan Sports Complex. Game time is 1:00 p.m. with an official ribbon cutting ceremony slated for prior to the game.
