NORFOLK, Va. -- Coming off a season-opening road win at defending Big South Champion High Point University, the Lady Monarchs (1-0) will stay on the road for two games this weekend. The team will face George Washington University (0-1) on Friday at 4:00 pm and will play defending MAAC Champion Loyola College (Md.) (0-1) on Sunday at 5:00 pm. Both Old Dominion and Loyola are receiving votes in the SOCCER BUZZ Mid-Atlantic Regional Top 10.
ODU has not played George Washington since the 2000 season, in a game that resulted in a 5-0 ODU victory. GWU lost their season opener to Rutgers University, 3-1. The Colonials jumped to a 1-0 lead with a goal by freshman Brittany Schornstein, but lost after giving up three unanswered scores in the second half. Lindsey Rowe played all 90 minutes in goal and made ten saves.
On Sunday, Old Dominion will face the Greyhounds for the fourth time. With a 2-1 win last season, the Lady Monarchs hold a 2-1 edge in the all-time series. Loyola lost their opener to 6th ranked UVa in a 4-0 matchup. The Greyhounds mustered just one shot in the contest against the Cavaliers. However, the team won the MAAC championship a year ago and had five shutouts at home.
The Lady Monarchs opened with a 3-0 victory on the road at High Point University, powered by a two-goal performance from senior Shavon Knight. Rookies Victoria Johnson and Jocelyn Weidner also notched their first career points with a goal and an assist respectively. Senior keeper Lauren Tupman played all 90 minutes between the posts for her ninth career shutout as ODU outshot the Panthers 29-4.
The three-game road swing ends at Loyola and the Lady Monarchs host their first regular season game of the year next weekend as they welcome Liberty University on Friday, September 5, and Elon University on Sunday, September 7.
