QINGDAO, CHINA -- Anna Tunnicliffe, a 2005 ODU graduate from Plantation, Fla., has clinched at least a third place finish and thus will become the first former Monarch medalist in the 2008 games. She is sitting atop the standings in the Laser Radial class heading into the Medal Race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and because of the point spread is guaranteed a medal. She made her aggressive move on Sunday and Monday with a third and two second place efforts. She has 33 net points, ahead of the fleet by seven. Points in the medal race count double and the race will be held at 1:00 am (EST).
The former ODU All-American celebrated her accomplishment today, but still has one race to sail to determine her finish. The top ten boats will sail tomorrow morning in the medal race. The two sailors vying against Tunnicliffe for the Gold will be Lithuania's Gintare Volungeviciute and China's Lijia Xu, of whom the American has a seven- and 11-point lead, respectively.
Sally Barkow ('02-Nashotah, Wisc.) and Debbie Capozzi ('03-Bayport, N.Y.) finished 9th in the Yngling Medal Race, giving them 61 net points and a 7th place Olympic finish.
Charlie Ogletree ('89-Kemah, Texas) and teammate John Lovell, the 2004 silver medalists in the Tornado class, continue to struggle in the Qingdao waters and are in 14th place after seven races. They will sail three more races on Tuesday and Wednesday to make a push toward the top ten, who will sail in the Medal Race on Thursday at 1:00 am (EST).
