QINGDAO, CHINA -- Three former Lady Monarchs were on the water at the 2008 Beijing Olympics today and all three made positive pushes toward medaling in their events. World ranked No. 1 sailor Anna Tunnicliffe ('05-Plantation, Fla.) maintained her slot atop the Laser Radial class with another consistent finish among the top sailors. In the Yngling class, 2005 and 2007 Female Sailor of the Year Sally Barkow ('02-Nashotah, Wisc.) and crew Debbie Capozzi ('03-Bayport, N.Y.) cruised to sole possession of third place with a winning finish on Wednesday.
Tunnicliffe and the 28 other singlehanded sailors were scheduled for two races on Wednesday, but the wind would allow for only one finish. The ODU alum finished sixth on Wednesday to bring her total score to 15 points, pacing the fleet by seven. Through three races she has finished with a consistent 4th, 5th and 6th place mark to grab ahold the international lead. Croatia's Mateja Petronijevic, in second place, is the only other sailor to maintain a finish in the top ten in all three races.
In the Yngling class, the teams also were only able to finish one complete race with the American team taking the victory. The win vaulted the team from a tie for third into sole possession of the slot ahead of Greece and Australia with 33 total points in the 15-boat class. The teams will race three more heats on Thursday before the Medal Race on Saturday.
