WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Old Dominion hung tough for the first 20 minutes, staying within one goal of the Tribe, but 20th ranked William & Mary started to pull away and showed why they will be the #1 seed and host of next weekend's CAA Tournament. The Lady Monarchs (4-9, 0-7) concluded the 2008 season with a 19-7 loss to William & Mary who improve to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the CAA. Six different Lady Monarchs scored in the game and sophomore rookie Saratu Dodo grabbed two goals in the game.
The Lady Monarchs played inspired lacrosse for the first twenty minutes, including senior Kaelyn Schival scoring a goal in her final game and the team taking the lead early in the game on sophomore Jessica Capra's second goal of the season. Juniors Brittany Washko and Erica Erb were terrific on defense in the stretch, as they were the catalysts forcing turnovers and picking up groundballs.
The Tribe led by no more than two in the first twenty minutes, despite CAA leading scorer Jaime Sellers scoring three straight goals within 3:04 in the first half. Sophomores Ashley Kellogg and Saratu Dodo would also score in the first half, with Dodo's score cutting the lead back to one at 5-4 with just over 13 minutes remaining. Her goal came off an assist by Jessica Noone.
William & Mary, though, would then score 10 straight, including six straight to close the first half in the final 10:29. Mary Zulty scored four while Grace Golden and Ashley Holofcener scored three during the span.
Erb continued her stellar game by snapping the run, scoring on a laser from the arc off an assist by senior Kelly Kimener. It was the second assist of the game for Kimener, who finishes the season with a team-high 13 assists and 32 points.
Dodo would notch her second goal off an assist from Kellogg with 10:13 remaining and freshman Brienna Faust nailed her first career goal late in the game to round out the Lady Monarchs scoring. Faust took an initial shot that came bounding back off the goalkeepers stick, she collected the rebound and sent it home for the goal.
Washko led the team in groundballs with four and Erb caused a team-high three turnovers in the game. Washko added two caused turnovers and a draw control while Erb added the goal and one groundball.
The 2008 women's lacrosse season concludes for Old Dominion with a final record of 4-9.
