Karen Barefoot Resigns From Lady Monarch Coaching Staff

April 5, 2008

NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion women's basketball assistant coach Karen Barefoot announced her resignation from the Lady Monarch coaching staff Saturday to take the helm of the Elon women's basketball program.

"I wish Karen continual success as head coach at Elon," said Old Dominion head coach Wendy Larry. "We are thankful for the time she has committed to Lady Monarch basketball."

Barefoot spent the last three seasons as a member of the Lady Monarch coaching staff helping the team to a 77-23 overall and 51-3 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) mark, three CAA titles, and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including this year's march to the "Sweet 16".

"I would like to thanks the entire Old Dominion family - coaches, student-athletes, administrators, and fans - for the last amazing three seasons," said Barefoot. "Most importantly, I would like to thank Coach Larry for the wonderful opportunity to coach a remarkable and talented group of young women and in helping me grow in the profession. I wish nothing but success for everyone in the future."

The Old Dominion women's basketball team finished the season at 31-5 overall, the most wins for the program since the 1996-97 season. The Lady Monarchs captured its NCAA record 17th straight CAA title and danced to its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance making a run to the tournament's "Sweet 16." Old Dominion returned to the Top 25 ranking as high as 10th nationally in the Associated Press Poll.

A national search to fill the vacant position will be immediately.
