WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Lady Monarchs got four goals from sophomore Ashley Kellogg as they put away American (1-1) by a final score of 9-5 in the 2008 season opener. Seniors Kelly Kimener and Kaelyn Schival added three points apiece as the Lady Monarchs led by as many as five goals in the game. ODU (1-0) opened the season with a win for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
The Lady Monarchs got goals from four different players as they jumped to a 4-1 lead at the break. Kellogg scored an unassisted goal in the second minute of play to give ODU their first score early, followed by a free position goal from Jessica Capra. Kimener scored off an assist from Jessica Noone and then assisted on fellow senior Kaelyn Schival's goal with 4:06 remaining in the half.
American would answer late, with just 1:18 remaining in the half, with an unassisted toss from Lauren Lane to cut the halftime lead to three at 4-1.
ODU would add two more early in the second half, scoring twice in the first 2:47. Kellogg added her second of the day off an assist from Schival with 27:54 remaining. Less than a minute later, Jessica Noone would add her first goal of the season, an unassisted score with 27:13 remaining.
The teams then went back and forth for the remaining seven scores, as Kellogg added her third and fourth goals and senior Sigrid Paulus scored the final ODU goal of the game with 8:18 remaining. Kellogg's four goals came on six shots, four on-goal. Of ODU's 26 shots, they put 20 on-goal and scored nine times.
Also strong in the midfield early this season, ODU won 10 draws to American's five and at one point held a 7-0 advantage in the category.
Sara Larson played all 60 minutes in goal and made 14 saves as she improved to 1-0.
The Lady Monarchs will return to the field at home on Monday, March 3 at 3:00 pm as they host St. Joseph's.
