Swimming And Diving Sweeps American, Spilts With George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Old Dominion swimming and diving teams took on American, Army, and George Mason on Saturday afternoon in a quad meet at the Jim McKay Natatorium on the campus of George Mason. The women's squad defeated American, 164-133 while the men defeated the Eagles, 232-63. Against the Army Black Knights, the Old Dominion women took home a 200-100 win, while the men edged out the U.S. Military Academy, 166-133. The squads spilt the meet against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival George Mason as the men picked up a 204-95 victory while the women fell 161-139 to the Patriots.

The men's squad improved to 9-0 on the year in the wins over George Mason and American with senior Patrik Balint leading the way by winning three individual events as well as a win with the 400 free relay squad on the afternoon. The Monarchs won nine total events.

Balint edged out the competition in the 200 free clocking in at 1:42.52 as well as the 100 back with a time of 52.10. He also took the top time in the 500 free with a 4:41.67. Balint joined Johan Lundberg, Kristofer Haff, and Chad Gangwer on the winning 400 free relay team with a 3:12.18.

The Monarchs logged six other top finishes in the quad-meet. Kevin Latimer won two individual events on the day. Latimer was victorious in his first place finish in the 200 fly logging a time of 1:55.43, while he also took the top finish in the 400 IM registering a time of 4:13.36. Daniel Gallagher won the 1650 in a time of 16:28.83 and placed second in the 200 back behind teammate Mikael Ramkvist. Ramkvist had the top time with 1:53.68, while Gallagher took second in a time of 1:56.24. Wesley Murai also logged another Monarch victory with a 51.82 time in the 100 fly.

Two-time CAA men's diver of the week, Noah Scully, won the 1 meter with a score of 316.05, nearly 18 points higher than the second place finisher.

The women meanwhile moved their record to 6-4 on the year and recorded five top times in the quad-meet.

Both April Barrientos and Jennifer Sargent led the Lady Monarchs with two victories apiece. Barrientos continued her winning ways in the backstroke events. She was the only competitor to hit the wall in under a minute with a time of 57.60 in the 100 back. She followed up with a first place time of 2:07.35 in the 200 back. Sargent and Kelley Sayers took one-two in the breast stroke events. In the 100 breast, Sargent won the event in a time of 1:06.34, eding out Sayers by .24 seconds. Sargent also won the 200 with a 2:22.95, while Sayers clocked in with a second place time of 2:24.81. Both of Sargent's times were the fastest for the Lady Monarchs this season.

Caroline Larsson also took home a top time in the 400 IM nearly five seconds than the next finisher with her time of 4:34.61.

The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving squads return to action on Friday, February 1 against William & Mary. It will be the final meet for the Monarchs and Lady Monarchs before heading to the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championships.
