Dec. 14, 2007
NORFOLK, Va. -- The 2007 NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division I regional rankings were released late Thursday evening with the names of four Monarchs. CAA Defender of the Year David Horst (Pine Grove, Pa.) and All-CAA 1st Team midfielder Trevor Banks (Madison, Wis.) were named to the All-South Atlantic First Team while the Monarchs sophomore keeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) and senior midfielder A.J. Kulp (Ephrata, Pa.) earned third team honors. All four, plus senior defender Yomby William (Bafoussam, Cameroon), were named First Team All-State by the members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) Thursday as well.
Horst earns his second consecutive First Team All-Region selection by NSCAA/adidas. He was named the first ever consecutive winner of the CAA Defender of the Year award in 2007 as he anchored an Old Dominion defense that posted 12 shutouts and a 0.63 goals against average. He helped lead ODU to its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Third Round.
It is the first selection to the All-Region team for Banks, Newton and Kulp. Banks led the team in goals with six and was second on the team in points with 15. He scored twice against College Cup semifinalist Ohio State.
Newton is one of just six first- or second-year players to be named to the 2007 All-Region squads. He posted 11 solo shutouts and combined for a 12 while only allowing 16 goals in 24 games. He was in goal for all but 17 minutes of game time this season and boasted a 0.63 goals against average.
Kulp led the team in points and assists with 18 and eight respectively, and added five goals on the season. The senior co-captain was the field general in the attacking midfield position and the offense always went through him as he either scored in or assisted a goal in 11 of the last 12 games ODU scored. He broke career highs in every offensive category
The four All-Region players were joined by senior defender Yomby William as All-State honorees. All five Monarchs nominated for the VaSID honor were named to the first team. ODU boasted more All-State players than any other school in the Commonwealth and no other school had more than two players named to the first team.
Horst, William and Kulp have been invited to participate in the 2008 MLS Combine in early January immediately preceding the 2008 MLS SuperDraft.
